As an intern for a big company like Starcom, you learn a lot about the advertising industry. In my role on the Chevy activation team I am beginning to understand the ins and outs of media planning, but one of the most important lessons I gained from this internship is how to adjust to a new city.
Last fall I heard about the Starcom internship at my school, the University of Iowa’s, internship and career fair. I interviewed for a position at the Chicago office but was placed in Detroit. Initially I was disappointed, but I decided to look at this summer as an adventure in a place I had never been before.
I moved to Detroit from St. Louis, my home town, at the beginning of June to start interning with Starcom GM. I was terrified coming to a new place and knowing no one except for my roommate, who I only met one time before the move. My roommate, Michele, is also an intern this summer at Starcom GM and a student at the University of Iowa. We had heard rumors about the dangerous “Dirty D” and were nervous about what the city would have in store for us.
Together we ran into the typical difficulties of moving to a new place: getting lost (resulting in a few unexpected tours of 8-Mile Road), missing our friends and family, etc. Although we had our fair share of hard days, after a month of living and working here, Detroit feels much more like a home than a temporary living situation.
The people I work with on the Chevy team at Starcom GM are the biggest reason my transition to living in a new place has been so enjoyable. Everyone on the team reached out to answer any of our questions and help us find things to do. We had the opportunity to attend a Glee concert and a Tigers baseball game for free in suites with our co-workers. Another of our co-workers showed us around Royal Oak -- a trendy Detroit suburb with great shopping and restaurants. People in the office encouraged Michele and I to explore the area around our building during lunch. We also tried some of the local food with girls in the office. One of my favorites is the $3 salads from a restaurant across the street.
The Starcom GM office is awesome and has a great location! The office is located on the border of Canada and Michigan. There is a beautiful view from the kitchen on our floor overlooking the Detroit River and the coast of Canada. On nice days you can walk along the river or eat on the patio of the office and look out over the city.

This summer has been the biggest learning experience of my life. I am becoming well versed with the different programs essential in the advertising world and I am learning a lot about myself. Leaving my comfort zoneat home was difficult, but I am much stronger and a more mature person today because of my decision to move to a new city. I appreciate all the help given from the people who work at Starcom GM, and I owe a lot of my happiness here to their efforts. I’m happy I took the plunge and moved to a new city for the summer. I would not trade it for anything.
